When people talk about what is data in data mining, they generally refer to the raw facts and records that are analyzed to get useful patterns. This information can range from customer information, transactions, website activity, product information or business performance metrics. It can originate from other systems applications, spreadsheets and databases. The information needs to be cleaned, structured and prepared for analysis as the data may not be accurate or complete and could impact the results. A critical first step in deriving valuable insights from any set of data is to understand where it comes from and its quality.
