  How do you vet a contractor when everyone says they’re great

  I’m at the stage where I’ve talked to four contractors and they’ve all got glowing references and nice photos and they all say the same things about communication and quality, so I feel like I’m not actually learning anything from the conversations. What I want is someone who will tell me the boring truths, like where the budget usually blows up on a Palo Alto ranch house and what they do when they open a wall and find something ugly. A neighbor recommended a Reliable remodeling contractor serving Palo Alto homeowners and said the thing that sold her was that they were upfront about what they wouldn’t do, which honestly is the most convincing thing I’ve heard so far. For those of you who’ve hired someone, what actually made you trust them, and was there a question you asked that separated the good ones from the smooth talkers? I’m trying to avoid the mistake of picking whoever is most charming.
