So I’ve been getting calls from the Law Offices of Christian J. Amendt for about a week now. They call from a local number and I’ve let it go to voicemail each time. The messages are pretty vague – just saying they’re a law firm and I need to call them back “regarding a matter that requires my attention.”

I finally looked them up and it seems like they’re a debt collection law firm based out of California. The thing is, I don’t have any debts that I know of that would be in collections. I have a couple of credit cards that I’m current on, my car loan is paid, and I haven’t received any letters from them in the mail.

I’m honestly freaking out a little. Could this be a mistake? Could someone have stolen my identity and opened an account I don’t know about? Or is this just a really aggressive collections tactic where they’re hoping I’ll call back and confirm my personal info?

I’ve read that if a law firm is actually suing you, they have to serve you properly with papers, not just call you. But I’m still nervous. I don’t want to ignore something that could turn into a default judgment or wage garnishment.

Has anyone else dealt with this firm specifically? What happened when you called them back? Did they actually have a legitimate claim or was it a case of mistaken identity? I’m trying to decide whether to call them and ask for validation or just wait and see if they send something in writing.

Also, I read somewhere that you should never negotiate over the phone and always get everything in writing first. Is that true? I just don’t want to make a wrong move and end up making things worse for myself.

Any insight or shared experiences would really help calm my nerves right now. Thanks in advance.
